My sweet friend, Amy, and I got together yesterday afternoon and made homemade powdered laundry detergent.  I've had several people ask me about the recipe we used.  I haven't found this exact one (we got it from another friend) on Pinterest, so I thought I would post it here.

So far, I have only used it on a couple of loads, but am loving the way it smells and how soft my clothes feel!  I have an HE front loading machine, as does my friend that passed on the recipe.  She said that it works great and that it also helps with the odor that can accompany front-loaders.  I'm PUMPED about that aspect!

I don't have the numbers for how much it cost to make this vs. how much detergent is.  I'm guessing it the ingredients were $15-$20 and it gives you about 33 cups of detergent.  You only use 2 Tbsp per load, so it'll do a LOT of laundry!

INGREDIENTS
  • 76 oz Borax (detergent aisle)
  • 4 lb Arm & Hammer baking soda (baking aisle)
  • 55 oz Arm & Hammer Super Washing soda (detergent aisle)
  • 3 bars Felz-Naptha or Zote soap (detergent aisle)
  • 3.5 lb oxy clean (detergent aisle)
  • 1 large bottle fabric softener crystals
INSTRUCTIONS

1. Grate the Felz-Naptha with a cheese grater or food processor.
2. Toss all ingredients into a 5 gallon bucket lined with a garbage bag, mix and store.
3. Use approx 2tbsp per load.

A couple of notes:
  • The Felz Naptha will dissolve in cold water.
  • Mix together outside, if possible.  There is a LOT of fine powder and it flies up everywhere.  It's NOT fun to inhale...I speak from experience :)
